So, as I have mentioned before, language teaching might not be the only option I could try to find a job in Italy.

For the last seven years I have increasingly worked in the ICT sector.

Startig from developing website for the languagecentre Berlitz in Birmingham, I now work at the University of Birmingham still with the designing and maintaining the School of Education website.

In addition to designing websites I also worked with developing and maintaining the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which was WebCT, but since it has been bought by it's main competitor in the field will merge with Blackboard in the near future.

I also worked with creating muti-media such as audio, video and flash as well as interactive DVDs.

But... as with my teaching before, I didn't actually study any of it or have any certificates showing that I have the skills I am claiming of having.

In the language-teaching field the way to overcome this is to do the City and Guilds Introduction to teaching award followed by the TEFL, in the ICT field I am at the moment already doing a "Diploma in Web Development", which is validated and quality assured by BTEC and aligned with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 4.

The diploma is made out of 6 modules which are assessed; the modules are:

- Web Graphics & Animation (Using Macromedia Flash to create animated content for the web)
- Writing for the Web (which means marketing and Search Engine optimisation (SEO), ie writing especially for websites to make them attractive and viable to be listed highly in Google)
- Databases on the Web (Well, the title says it all)
- Database Design and SQL (Again, it it exactly what it say on the tin, ie how to design relaional databases which then can be build in either SQL or MS Access)
- Exploring XML (For writing multiple content transformations to creating WAP pages and producing XML from databases)
- Programming for the Web (Introduction to web programming languages and environments e.g. JavaScript, PHP, Java, ASP etc.)
- PHP: Primed and Ready (an introduction to PHP to be able to add dynamic server side functionality to websites)

I should finish the course by christmas at the latest.

Then I am looking to do a "Certificate in Professional Studies in Multimedia Design and Production" which is also module or workshop based, so like the diploma more hands-on and practical than theoretical. The focus for this certificate is more on video and multi-media and not so much on programming like the diploma.

With my experience with building Virtual Learning Environments, to which there is no standadised training as far as I am aware, I hope to have enough certification and experience to try to get a job in the ICT sector in Italy. :)

Well... 8|

Once can always hope... ;)
