next time you owe a fine, for parking or tax or anything like that, heres is what you should do...

send an EMPTY envelope to whomever it is you owe the money to. send it recorded delivery. whoever receives it will sign for it, before it is opened.

then there you have it, according to you, the cheque was sent, and signed for, and received. if they cant find it, thats their lil' problem!

In response to:Go to jail...

oh my god!!!!
I just love wearing my wellies and am very envious when I see all these guys walking round in their wellies and having so much fun in the mud.
I wear my wellies everyday when I go taking our dog for a walk on the beach. She loves going in the water and so do I.
First fell in love with wellies when I was a kid of 12 and still get a buzz of excitement everytime I pull them on.
I get a real thrill from wearing them in town for other people to see.

In response to:The plan

Hi, I am an Italian learner in beginning level. I found a free word of the day widget is very useful for me to build my basic Italian vocabulary (http://www.transparent.com/wotd/today/italian.htm), which can be embedded on any site easily. I can remember by heart one single word per day by reading it, hearing it and seeing it used in a real sentence through this tool. I like your site full of Italian information and I`d like to share my experience of Italian learning.

In response to:Yesterday Prague, tomorrow Zeithain...

Hey....I am waiting for you here in Budapest- Where are the pictures of this camp?

In response to:No Cambridge CELTA in Florence ? The reformation was a rejection of Church tradition and a faith based on 'Scriptura Solaris'. The Church was based upon what Jesus said to Simon Peter: "I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church..." setting up a Church based upon the Gsopels but also traditions and teachings that were sanctioned by it. St Paul was part of this, and so was St Augustine, Thomas Aquinas etc etc.
There are shed loads of interpretations to be made from what was written in the Bible, which is why protestantism splintered so many times. The Catholics have always had the authority of the Church to rely on, which is why it remains so strong. As a Catholic you probably know all this, so sorry if this is old news to you.

Can't agree with you more on ritual. When it comes to ritual, Catholicism shits on everyone else.

In response to:Oh Italy... now you are having a catholic eg medieval moment?

True, one of the nicer features of the Catholic Church is the decorative and ornamental style of their churches and all the pomp and ritual that goes with the service (no wonder all the movies like "The Omen" to "The Da-Vinci code" depict Catholic Church traditions with their millenia-old ritals and secretisms rather than focus on Prespitarian church traditions) - all of which makes the experience of worshipping an awe-inspering experience (nothing beats the full blast of an organ that makes the benches creak or the angelic harmonies of Gregorian chants or the oratorios of Hildegard von Bingen) but there are ample opportunities for the Catholic Church to appear non-mainstream.

All it would take is to stick to their roots: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven" Matthew 19:24, Mark 10:25, and Luke 18:25.

Or "Though shalt not kill." - both themes alone(Hedonism/consumerism and the readiness to wage war - see Iraq or Afghanisthan) I would have thought enough to be controversial and non-mainstream without having to invent notions that don't appear anywhere in the Gospel.

In response to:Oh Italy... now you are having a catholic eg medieval moment?

I think the strategy that the Catholic Church has adopted has been to be more hard-line in their teaching. That is not to say that they wrong etc etc, but this is the best way to deal with the 'new-age'. Instead of trying to become part of main stream culture, the Church has attempted to separate itself from it, so that it is distinct and different, should people look to it as an alternative to rampant consumerism etc. If you take a look at the Church of England for example - rather than make their beliefs clear and unequivocal, they have accepted whatever they deemed as 'normal' and mainstream and have since slipped into obscurity and is largely irrelevant. Many Anglicans have defected to the Catholic CHurch for this reason. I think this explains the above story - the Church do not want to 'de-value' marriage in any way, though I'm sure they could have let this one go.

In response to:Zeithain revisited... or the issue of Nazi compensation claims row between Germany and Italy

Exactly, unfortunaly it seem to have become a legal & fiscal argument, rather than a moral issue.

In response to:Oh Italy... now you are having a catholic eg medieval moment?

Well, that is exactly my point - all christian faiths normally say "God is Love", except for the Catholic Church when it comes to marriage, the it is more "God is penetration" (sorry for the blunt language).

And besides, even if marriage is "only" about bringing up children, what about adoption or (to go a bit further) thought the guy may be paraplegic, does that also mean that he can not produce sperm - because he could still father a child via IVF.

And well observed your last point - the Catholic Church is also about miracles, so is it not a bit narrow-minded to rule those out categorically by denying the guy the marriage?

In response to:Zeithain revisited... or the issue of Nazi compensation claims row between Germany and Italy

Is money really the way to get over painful memories?

In response to:Oh Italy... now you are having a catholic eg medieval moment?

I perfectly understand your point of view on this matter - but do you not think that the Bishop is avoiding marrying two people when the marriage will not be consumated? If it is not consumated, it is ground for an annulment, as you say, and a priest is not meant to marry people where he knows there is a problem. A civil ceremony should suffice on that logic. The major reason for marriage is to bring up children in a kind and loving environment - if no children are possible, it sort of makes it pointless in the eyes of the church. It does seem a bit unfair though - give the guy a break - he's a bloody paraplegic, and anyway, who's to say a miracle won't happen?!?!

In response to:Oh dear, Italy is having a Maggie moment...

Hey, Rolf I support Silvio Berlusconi.
