The reformation was a rejection of Church tradition and a faith based on 'Scriptura Solaris'. The Church was based upon what Jesus said to Simon Peter: "I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church..." setting up a Church based upon the Gsopels but also traditions and teachings that were sanctioned by it. St Paul was part of this, and so was St Augustine, Thomas Aquinas etc etc.<br> There are shed loads of interpretations to be made from what was written in the Bible, which is why protestantism splintered so many times. The Catholics have always had the authority of the Church to rely on, which is why it remains so strong. That is not to say that they wrong etc etc, but this is the best way to deal with the 'new-age'. Instead of trying to become part of main stream culture, the Church has attempted to separate itself from it, so that it is distinct and different, should people look to it as an alternative to rampant consumerism etc. If you take a look at the Church of England for example - rather than make their beliefs clear and unequivocal, they have accepted whatever they deemed as 'normal' and mainstream and have since slipped into obscurity and is largely irrelevant. Many Anglicans have defected to the Catholic CHurch for this reason. If it is not consumated, it is ground for an annulment, as you say, and a priest is not meant to marry people where he knows there is a problem. A civil ceremony should suffice on that logic. The major reason for marriage is to bring up children in a kind and loving environment - if no children are possible, it sort of makes it pointless in the eyes of the church.
